Watermelon Strawberry Citrus Sangria August 19, 2013

The first sangria I ever made was in college with some friends…we used a Brita filter.  That’s a fond memory I’ll think back on and chuckle about, but though the company was great I don’t think the sangria turned out as well as this one.  This is the second sangria I’ve ever made, and it is amazing.  Is it fussier than some recipes?  Sure.  Does it require more ingredients?  Definitely.  Trust me, it’s worth it.  This is so refreshing, and refreshingly different.  It’s perfect for the hottest of summer days when you want a little something to sip on that’s on the lighter side with plenty of fresh fruit flavor.  I’ve made it three times in less than a month, and everyone loved it, even though I had to vary the recipe slightly due to missing ingredients.  If you like sangria, or are just looking for a drink to make for a party that’s pretty in a glass and sure to please, definitely make this one!

Watermelon Strawberry Citrus Sangria

   Ingredients

  • 4 cups watermelon juice, from one small watermelon
  • 1 pound fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
  • 1 bottle Rose wine, not too sweet is best
  • 1 cup vodka
  • 1 cup limoncello or Contreau
  • juice of 2 oranges
  • juice of 1 lime
  • 1 orange sliced
  • 1 lime sliced

   Directions

Slice a watermelon into large chunks.  Reserve a few smaller chunks for the sangria jar and for garnish.  Blend watermelon chunks with a handful of sliced strawberries until smooth. Depending on the size of your blender, you may need to blend the fruit in two batches.  Strain fruit juice through a fine mesh strainer and into a large measuring cup.  You’ll need about 4 cups of watermelon/strawberry juice.

In a large container stir together, watermelon/strawberry juice, wine, vodka, limoncello, orange juice, and lime juice.  Stir in the remaining sliced strawberries, a few watermelon chunks, sliced oranges, and sliced lime.  Chill thoroughly before serving.  Serve over ice.  I poured the sangria through a small strainer into the glasses as I noticed that some seeds were still in the pitcher.  They’re strawberry seeds, though, so even if you get some in your drink it’s no big deal!
